Life-centred Futures: Sustainability, Interaction Design, and AI

Description

The course introduces students to the life-centered approach to design that encompasses not just people, but the planet we live on. Students learn how to use their disciplinary knowledge to drive innovation for sustainable solutions in alignment with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. This course offers a balanced blend of theoretical concepts and practical exercises to help students apply their learning to real world projects. It introduces students to the tools of interaction design that can help achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the UN. The course introduces students to examples of sustainability and circular design in practice and learn how humanity-centered design can identify solutions to large and complex socio-technical problems. It introduces ways to facilitate behavior change, which is crucial to address the world's most significant issues. Finally, the students learn how they can contribute to designing a better world on a practical level and the role of artificial intelligence in the future of design. Students work on a semester project, apply learnings from the course to develop a conceptual design for identified problems. Cross-listed with FA/PANF 4933 3.0.
